Dormant since 2010, a Bitcoin wallet awakens as an anonymous user moves 1,005 BTC valued at $29 million. Read the news here!
In an exciting twist for the crypto community, a dormant Bitcoin wallet from 2010 has come to life. An anonymous user recently transferred 1,005 BTC worth a staggering $29 million from this ancient wallet.
Blockchain researcher, Kirill Kretov, initially noticed this blast from the past, emphasizing the coin’s vintage value. “These are 100% clean Bitcoins. Their age makes them exceptionally appealing to crypto enthusiasts,” said Kretov. Initial speculations within the community wondered if this might be the mysterious Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, shifting coins. However, Kretov doubts this theory, suggesting instead that it’s probably a long-term holder or an entity related to other recent reactivations of old Bitcoin wallets.
Data from Blockchair confirms the wallet’s history, revealing that the 1,005 BTC was worth merely $328 when first acquired in 2010. An impressive appreciation!
Kretov points to a pattern: this isn’t the first vintage Bitcoin awakening. Between 2020 and 2021, 13 dormant Bitcoin wallets were activated, each holding 1,000 BTC. Interestingly, Kretov’s extensive monitoring of early Bitcoin wallets identified only three other major movements of 1,000 BTC or more. One such move happened in December 2021, and two more in 2023. “The current movement closely resembles those 13 earlier instances,” Kretov added.
Lastly, another noteworthy transfer from a dormant wallet was the movement of over 1,037 BTC acquired in April 2012. Its value back then? $5,100. Its value during the 2023 transfer? A whopping $31 million.
