BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain, the network of BNB Smart Chain (BSC), the opBNB layer 2 and BNB Greenfield storage. It started in 2017 as Binance’s exchange token and still gives fee discounts there, but on chain it pays gas and is staked to validators. This page covers how BSC works, what it costs, how burns shrink the supply, staking, and the risks of BNB’s close ties to Binance. Crypto assets are volatile and nothing here is financial advice.

Spec BNB / BNB Smart Chain
Created June to July 2017, as a token sold in Binance’s ICO on Ethereum

What is BNB?

BNB, once called Binance Coin, is the native coin of BNB Chain. Binance created it in 2017 and sold 100 million BNB in an ICO from about 26 June to 3 July 2017, raising about $15 million. It moved from Ethereum to its own chain in April 2019. Today BNB pays gas on BNB Smart Chain, opBNB and BNB Greenfield, is staked to validators and is used in on-chain governance.

The ICO figures come from the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2023 complaint against Binance, which also quotes the original whitepaper’s plan to “destroy” half of the BNB supply over time using Binance’s profits. The mainnet date and current roles are given by the BNB Chain team in its 37th burn report.

BNB and Binance are linked but no longer identical. BNB Chain’s burn mechanism is described as independent of the Binance exchange, yet Binance created the token, remains its largest venue, and offers trading-fee discounts for paying in BNB. Our Binance review covers the exchange itself.

How does BNB Smart Chain work?

BNB Smart Chain is an EVM-compatible blockchain secured by Proof of Staked Authority. BNB holders delegate to validators, and the 45 validators with the most stake form the active set: 21 Cabinet validators produce most blocks, while 24 Candidates have a small chance of producing blocks. Validators that double-sign or go offline are slashed. Since January 2026, blocks arrive about every 0.45 seconds.

The validator structure is set out in BNB Chain’s staking overview. EVM compatibility means Ethereum tools, wallets and smart contracts work with only small changes, and BSC addresses use the same 0x format as Ethereum. That convenience is also a trap: an exchange will not credit a BEP-20 deposit sent to its Ethereum deposit address.

BNB Chain also includes opBNB, a layer 2 built with the OP Stack, and BNB Greenfield, a decentralised storage network. The original BNB Beacon Chain was shut down in December 2024 under the BNB Chain Fusion plan, which moved its functions to BSC; legacy BEP-2 tokens now need the Fusion recovery tools.

How fast is BNB Smart Chain after the 2025 and 2026 hard forks?

BSC cut its block time three times in under a year. The Lorentz hard fork on 29 April 2025 halved it from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds, Maxwell on 30 June 2025 cut it to 0.75 seconds, and Fermi on 14 January 2026 cut it to about 0.45 seconds. Faster blocks mean quicker confirmations, though exchanges still set their own deposit confirmation counts.

Hard fork Mainnet activation (UTC) Block time after
Before 2025 Not applicable 3 seconds
Lorentz 29 April 2025, 05:05 1.5 seconds
Maxwell 30 June 2025, 02:30 0.75 seconds
Fermi 14 January 2026, 02:30 About 0.45 seconds

Activation times come from BNB Chain’s announcements for Lorentz, Maxwell and Fermi. The burn report notes that, because blocks are now more frequent, the parameters of the block-based Auto-Burn formula were adjusted.

How much does a BNB Smart Chain transaction cost?

BSC fees are gas used multiplied by the gas price, paid in BNB. BNB Chain says the network has adopted a 0.05 gwei standard gas price, which puts typical transactions at around $0.005 or less. A plain BNB transfer uses 21,000 gas, the same as an ETH transfer, so at 0.05 gwei it costs 0.00000105 BNB. Swaps and other contract calls use more gas.

The gas price and typical fee come from BNB Chain’s BSC overview. The transfer figure is our arithmetic: 21,000 gas x 0.05 gwei = 1,050 gwei, and one gwei is 0.000000001 BNB. Part of every block’s gas fees is burned under BEP-95, at a ratio that validators set through governance.

Illustrative action on BSC Gas used Cost at 0.05 gwei
Send BNB 21,000 0.00000105 BNB
Contract call using 100,000 gas (for example a token transfer or simple swap) 100,000 (illustrative) 0.000005 BNB
Contract call using 300,000 gas (complex DeFi action) 300,000 (illustrative) 0.000015 BNB

Exchange withdrawal fees for BNB or BEP-20 tokens are set by each exchange and are usually far above the network cost.

How does the BNB burn work?

BNB has two burn mechanisms. The quarterly Auto-Burn destroys an amount set by a formula based on BNB’s price and the number of BSC blocks in the quarter, with the goal of shrinking total supply to 100 million BNB. Separately, BEP-95 burns part of the gas fees in every block. The 37th Auto-Burn, reported on 19 October 2026, destroyed 1,646,196.44 BNB and left 131,512,085 BNB.

The figures are from BNB Chain’s 37th burn report, which says the Auto-Burn is independently auditable, is reported quarterly and is independent of the Binance exchange. Since the Fusion, burns happen directly on BSC by sending BNB to the address 0x000000000000000000000000000000000000dEaD, where no one holds the key.

Burns reduce supply but do not by themselves set a price; the burn report’s own US dollar estimate depends on the market at that moment. Compare Ethereum’s EIP-1559 fee burn, which works like BEP-95, and Bitcoin’s fixed supply schedule.

How does staking BNB work?

You stake BNB by delegating it to a BSC validator through BNB Chain’s staking dApp or a supporting wallet. In return you receive that validator’s staking credit token, which is non-transferable between addresses. Rewards come from the validator’s share of gas fees after its commission. Undelegating starts a 7-day unbonding period, after which you claim the BNB back.

The 7-day period and staking credit design are described in the BNB staking user guide. Because validators can be slashed for double-signing or downtime, choose ones with a clean record. Exchanges also offer BNB products, but then the exchange holds the coins.

Which wallets and exchanges support BNB?

Because BSC is EVM-compatible, most Ethereum-style wallets can hold BNB and BEP-20 tokens once the BNB Smart Chain network is selected. Phantom lists BNB Chain among its supported networks, and TronLink’s extension supports BSC. BNB trades on Binance and on other large exchanges, including Kraken. Always choose BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) when withdrawing, not a legacy BEP-2 option.

Phantom’s supported networks list includes BNB Chain, and Kraken’s BNB page offers buying, selling and BNB futures. For wallet choices, see MetaMask vs Trust Wallet vs Phantom and, for cold storage, Ledger vs Trezor vs Coldcard.

Binance does not serve US residents; Binance.US is a separate company. For a fee comparison between the big platforms, read Binance vs Kraken vs Coinbase fees, and before moving funds off an exchange follow how to move crypto from an exchange to a wallet.

Did the October 2026 Binance hack affect BNB Chain?

The 29 October 2026 incident hit Binance’s exchange hot wallets, not the BNB Smart Chain protocol. Binance says attackers gained access to an internal wallet signing service and moved about $6.34 billion in assets, mostly on the XRP Ledger, Solana, Optimism, Bitcoin and Ethereum. Binance suspended withdrawals and says it set aside more than 100% of the losses, with 98% of affected tokens replenished by 31 October.

The details are in Binance’s own initial findings and response update of 3 November 2026, which says about $2.85 billion had been frozen or intercepted. The lesson for BNB holders is the same as for any coin: assets kept on an exchange depend on that exchange’s security. Read is it safe to keep crypto on an exchange for the trade-offs.

What are the main risks of BNB?

BNB’s main risks are its dependence on Binance, a small validator set, regulatory history and scams on a cheap, busy chain. The SEC called BNB a security in its June 2023 complaint against Binance, then dismissed the case with prejudice on 29 May 2025 as a policy decision, not a ruling on the merits. With 45 validators, BSC is far more concentrated than Ethereum.

  • Binance concentration. Binance created BNB, is its main market and is closely tied to its ecosystem, so problems at the exchange tend to affect sentiment around the coin.
  • Regulatory status. The SEC’s litigation release on the dismissal says it does not necessarily reflect the agency’s position in other cases.
  • Validator concentration. 21 Cabinet validators produce most blocks, which allows speed but means a small group could coordinate to halt or censor.
  • Scam tokens. Cheap deployment makes BSC popular for copycat and honeypot tokens that can be bought but not sold. Check a token’s contract on BscScan and never approve unlimited spending for unknown apps.

FAQ

Is BNB the same as Binance?

No. Binance is a crypto exchange; BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain. Binance created BNB in 2017 and still offers fee discounts for paying in it, but BNB now pays gas on BNB Smart Chain and its burn mechanism is described as independent of the exchange.

What is the difference between BEP-20 and BEP-2?

BEP-20 is the token standard on BNB Smart Chain and uses 0x addresses like Ethereum. BEP-2 was the standard on the old BNB Beacon Chain, which shut down in December 2024. Use BEP-20 for deposits and withdrawals today.

Will BNB stop being burned?

The quarterly Auto-Burn is designed to continue until total supply falls to 100 million BNB. After the 37th burn on 19 October 2026, the remaining total supply was 131,512,085 BNB. The real-time gas burn under BEP-95 continues with network activity.

How long does it take to unstake BNB?

Undelegated BNB on BNB Smart Chain has a 7-day unbonding period. After it ends you claim the BNB back in the staking dApp or your wallet. Products offered by exchanges can have different terms.

Should I buy BNB?

We do not give investment advice. This page explains how BNB and BNB Chain work, what they cost to use and what the risks are. BNB’s price can move sharply in either direction, and crypto assets are volatile, so nothing here is financial advice.
